Fault code P0053 – heated oxygen sensor heater resistance (Bank 1, Sensor 1)

Fault code P0053 is called “Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) Heater Resistance (Bank 1, Sensor 1)” but in different programs it may be called differently. This fault designation applies to all vehicles equipped with OBD-II.

Heated oxygen sensors (HO₂S) are used in vehicles to determine the oxygen content in the exhaust system before and after the catalytic converters. They use feedback to adjust the fuel system. To maintain an optimal air/fuel mixture ratio of 14.7:1.

Oxygen sensors use a heated sensor circuit for faster feedback to the control module. The oxygen sensor can use three or four wires depending on the vehicle.

Two are typically used for feedback to the transmission control module (PCM). And the other wires are for the heater and to power the heated circuit. Three-wire sensors are usually grounded through the exhaust system. And four-wire sensors have a separate ground wire.

Code P0053 refers to the sensor in front of the Bank 1 catalytic converter, which is on the engine side with cylinder 1. The error means that the resistance level in the heater circuit of the O₂ sensor exceeds the allowable programmed parameters.

If this error persists, the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) will likely illuminate. Some vehicles may require several failure cycles for the MIL to illuminate.

Symptoms of vehicle malfunctions

Wiring check

Check the heater circuit with a digital multimeter or voltmeter. Refer to the vehicle’s wiring diagram to determine the exact pins of the connector where the ground is installed.
